Voting for the 5th phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections covering 49 seats spread over 13 district, including Bundelkhand region, began on today morning. Fate of 829 candidates, including that of leader of opposition in the state assembly Shivpal Singh Yadav, BJP leader Uma Bharati and former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh would be decided by more than 1.56 crore electorates.
Polling for 49 seats in Firozabad, Kanshiram Nagar, Etah, Mainpuri, Etawah, Auraiya, Ramabainagar, Kanpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Hamirpur and Mahoba districts started at 7am amidst tight security, Chief Electoral officer Umesh Sinha said.

Congress key campaigner Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said his party, if voted to power, would generate adequate employment opportunities for them. “The Congress will ensure that people of Uttar Pradesh, especially youths, do not have to migrate to other states for jobs.
During the rule of BSP, SP and BJP in the state in the past 22 years, the youths had suffered a lot, the Congress general secretary said.
The former BJP chief and senior leader Rajnath Singh alleged that Congress was responsible for backwardness of Muslims in the country. “After independence, the Congress and its policies are responsible for backwardness of Muslims in the country,” he told an election rally here. The former BJP chief also lashed out at the Congress on the issue of corruption.
Turning to the ruling BSP, he said Chief Minister and party supremo Mayawati tried to clean her image by sacking tainted ministers. However, “she fully knows that a Minister cannot do a scam without CM’s knowledge”, the former BJP chief said.

The congress leader Beni Prasad Verma to meet EC on minority quota issue, The Election Commission has accepted Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma’s request to hear him. The poll panel is likely to meet with Mr Verma and his counsel on Friday. Last week, Mr Verma had said that his comments could have been a ‘slip of the tongue’ and he respected the poll panel.
