Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in second phase voting began on a slow note this morning but picked up by afternoon. 52% polling had been reported till 5 pm. Buoyed by the over 62 per cent voter turn out in the first phase, authorities hope this round too will see people voting in large numbers. 59 seats across nine districts, in what is known as the Poorvanchal region or eastern Uttar Pardesh, are up for grabs in this round of polling .

Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the polling of second phase began on saturday with a slow note, covering nearly two crore voters who will decide the fate of 1099 candidates. Once a Bharatiya Janata Party bastion, Chief Minister Mayawati does face a stiff challenge in defending 30 seats that it won in the 2007 elections.
Saturday’s constituencies are spread across nine districts – Azamgarh, Gorakhpur, Ballia, Ghazipur, Maharajganj, Deoria, Mau, Sant Kabir Nagar and Kushinagar. Most of them are located along the Bihar border. Saturday will see 20,426 polling stations and some 20,800 electronic voting machines (EVM).
