Second phase of election process for the three-tier Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh started with a record 2,90,356 candidates filing their nominations for first phase of elections.
The nomination process for the second phase will continue till September 28 and the polling is scheduled on October 14. A total of 12,656 gram panchayats of 198 blocks would be covered in the second phase during which 27.1 million electorate would elect their candidates.

The Supreme Court gave the green signal for the panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh scheduled for this week by staying an Allahabad High Court order that had put the polls in abeyance for reworking of the number of seats for scheduled castes and tribes.

The polls will start from October 11.
“The election will be held in four phases – October 11, 14, 20 and 25. The nomination process will start from September 23. In all around 11 crore voters will elect 7,60557 representatives across the state”, State Election Commissioner (Panchayat and Local Bodies) Rajendra Bhownwal told mediapersons.
Over 1.80 lakh polling booths will be marked for the polls that shall be held in all the districts except Etah and Kanshiram Nagar due to High Court orders.

Samajwadi Party decided not to field its candidates in the forthcoming panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh.”During the meeting of the state parliamentary board, which was chaired by state president Akhilesh Yadav, it was decided that the party will neither announce its official candidates nor will it field SP nominees in the panchayat elections,” party Spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said.
