Digvijay Singh has slammed BSP for corruption in Uttar Pradesh

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh has slammed Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for running the most corrupt government in Uttar Pradesh.

Talking to reporters, Singh said that except for the Congress, all other political parties in the state have corruption on their agenda, and the BSP tops the list.

“BSP’s government in Uttar Pradesh is one of the most corrupt governments of the country. However, be it Mulayam Singh’s government or BJP led government in the state corruption and favouritism engages them for their respective terms,” Singh added.

He further claimed that the BJP only pretends to be honest.

Mayawati government has misused official machinery in panchayat polls : Congress

Accusing the Mayawati government of misusing official machinery in three-tier panchayat elections, Uttar Pradesh Congress on Wednesday demanded that the results should be announced only after the State Election Commission’s approval. In a memorandum to Governor B L Joshi, a delegation of Congress leaders also demanded a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to those killed due to dengue and viral fever in the state.

The leaders alleged that the government had failed to conduct panchayat polls properly and a number of people were killed across the state.

Congress has begun the process of selection of candidates for the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and it is likely to be completed by next April, party general secretary Digvijay Singh said.

“The party has started the process of selection of candidates for the UP Assembly elections and its observers are moving in the state,” Singh said while addressing a backward convention organised by the Congress.

After November, suggestions on probable candidates will be taken from block, tehsil, city and district units.

Rahul backs agitating UP farmers

Rahul Gandhi took the Mayawati government by surprise when he visited Jikarpur village, the epicentre of the farmers’ stir, on Saturday and expressed his solidarity with the agitators in Uttar Pradesh.

The AICC general Secretary met the agitating farmers who have been demanding higher compensation for their land acquired by the UP government for the Expressway project and reached out to families of those who were injured or lost their lives in clashes with police.

Ajit Singh hints at alliance with Congress

Rashtriya Lok Dal president Ajit Singh on ruled out the possibility of merger with the Congress. At the same time, he kept the option open for an alliance with that party in the 2012 Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.

Talking to media persons RLD Chief Ajit Singh said at Lucknow this afternoon that the talks are at a primary level and the shape of the proposed alliance is yet to be finalised.

High Court stayed the move of Mayawati to rename Amethi

The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday stayed the move of BSP supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to rename Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar.

On July 1, Mayawati had renamed Amethi after the Dalit leader and declared that it would be a new district, the 72nd in the state.
