In a shocker for the Congress, the party was trailing in all five assembly seats in Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh which is represented in the Lok Sabha by party president Sonia Gandhi.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) has taken a big lead in Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) together pose a tough challenge for it. Going by the trends the SP is well on its way to emerge as the single largest party.
Counting of votes in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections 2012 for 403 seats began at 8 am on Tuesday with the initial trend suggesting early gains for the Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) being a close second.
The polling in the state was held in seven phases from February 8 to March 3. Fate of more than 6500 candidates are in fray.
Polling for the seventh and final phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections covering 60 constituencies ended today with around 62 % of voters exercising their franchise. The final phase today is in the western part and Terai region of the state. 968 candidates will battle it out today in 60 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. Most of these constituencies like Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur and Lakhempur Kheri fall under the Tarai region of the state.
Just UP polls ended, the CBI on Saturday arrested former UP health minister Babu Singh Kushwaha from the NCR. He is one of the main accused in the multi-crore NRHM scam. He will be produced in court by 6PM. Kushwaha, a BSP OBC leader of the state, was sacked by Mayawati following his alleged involvement in the multi-crore scam after which he joined the BJP.
The CBI had registered five cases on January 2 against certain government and private sector officials, including one against Kushwaha alleging loss of about Rs 28 crore in implementing the centrally-sponsored scheme meant for 72 districts…
Around 40 % of the 18 million eligible to vote on Saturday had cast their ballots between 7 am and 1 pm, officials monitoring the mammoth exercise here said. Saturday’s balloting covered 10 districts, with several political VIPs turning out to vote early in the day. These included actor-politician Jaya Prada and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Muqtar Abbas Naqvi. An Election Commission official said the polling was going on smoothly.
Among the high voting areas were Moradabad, Rampur, Pilibhit and Lakhimpur Kheri. The other districts are Bijnore, Bhimnagar, JP Nagar, Badaun, Bareilly and Shahjahanpur.
